Reduce Pain. Improve Function

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a treatment for relieving muscular tightness, spasm, and pain, which commonly follows injuries, and often accompanies the degenerative processes due to stress and overuse of the muscles. Muscular tightness and spasm can cause compression and irritation of the nerves exiting the spine. When the nerves are irritated, they cause a protective spasm of all the muscles to which they are connected. This may cause peripheral diagnoses such as carpal tunnel, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, decreased mobility and chronic pain.

How Is Dry Needling Treatment Performed?

Small, thin needles are inserted into painful areas of muscles known as trigger points. Then the skilled movement of the needle elicits relaxation and pain relief of the trigger points. Because the needles are so thin, the patient often does not feel the needle being inserted into the skin. The patient typically notices immediately increased flexibility of the muscle and a decrease in symptoms.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

Often with our first dry needling treatment, patients will experience increased range of motion, ease of movement and decreased pain. Some patients will experience some soreness after the treatment in the immediate or surrounding area treated. Soreness typically can last between a few hours to a couple of days and some bruising. To alleviate any soreness, apply ice or heat to the area and perform light stretching of the treated area.
